Our Tweed Valley – Niall Watson, Manager, Peebles Golf Club

Niall Watson joined Peebles Golf Club as part of a new management team in 2017. He is excited about adding to the history of a famous old club that has already been around for 125 years

Tell us more about your role and what you have looked to bring to the club since joining as manager

I am responsible for the day to day running of the golf club. Overseeing the greens team and bar team while working with our club franchises, the pro shop and catering team. Golf is a very traditional sport with each club having its own individual story to tell. I have looked to enhance the corporate identity of the club to ensure there are another 125 years of history to be proud of.

What do you enjoy most about what you do?

The fact no one day is the same – there is huge diversity to the role. Along with the love of golf and the people you meet.

How would you describe Peebles Golf Club to those who don’t know it?

Peebles is a vibrant community club with a recently-refurbished and family-friendly clubhouse that matches the splendour of the course itself.

And how would you describe the course to a visiting golfer?

It’s a par 70, 18-hole course with a par 3 opening hole. The views from all parts are superb, with beautifully-shaped fairways, maturing trees and well-prepared sloping greens. Peebles appeals to golfers of all standards. Both the front nine and back nine begin and end near the clubhouse, featuring a gradual rise-up and a gentle walk down.

Which is your favourite hole?

Probably the 9th (Hearthstanes). It’s a reachable-in-two par 5, with trouble left and right on your drive, and fantastic views across the town.

It was designed by Harry Colt who also designed Royal Lytham & St Anne’s and Royal Portrush (both Open Championship venues).

Proud winners of the 2015 RBS Junior Club of the Year Award, Peebles boasts a flourishing junior section – part of the national ClubGolf programme – with more than 150 junior members, ranging from age four and up. Year on year we have looked at innovative ways of developing this area and last year we built a driving range and swing studio. This year we will build a six-hole pitch and putt course as part of that academy.

What do you love most about the game?

It is the only sport where all levels of ability can compete against each other using the handicap system. Also, you find a lot of golf courses are built in beautiful locations – Peebles included.

Finally, how do you relax when away from the club?

Ironically by playing golf – I am also a member of North Berwick Golf Club. I’m also in the gym five/six times a week, and love to ski when I can get across to mainland Europe.
