When Summer smiled on sweet Bowhill
Sir Walter Scott wrote these words about Bowhill and though many summers have shone and gone since those dreamy days, the sweetness of the landscape remains and is only enhanced by the variety of activities on offer for visitors.
The Scottish Borders home of the Duke of Buccleuch displays an outstanding art collection with works by Canaletto, Claude, Raeburn, Reynolds, Gainsborough and Ruysdael. Its fine rooms display tapestries, superb French furniture, Sevres and Meissen china and silver.
Bowhill's magnificent woodlands offer a variety of peaceful walks for people of all ages and abilities, from those wanting a gentle stroll to those seeking a more strenuous challenge. Moreover, if walking is not enough, visitors can always try the Adventure Playground, a firm favourite with children of all ages. In addition to the main events below, over the summer Bowhill Ranger Service offers a series of crafts and activities for families and adults.
The Courtyard, housed within a number of attractive buildings also has a range of interesting things to do and see. From our James Hogg Exhibition, Victorian Kitchen, Visitor Centre and Courtyard games, to our gift shop and Minstrel Tearoom, there is something for everyone.
Bowhill also hosts an intimate 72-seater theatre transformed from the old Victorian Game Larder. The theatre presents a varied programme of music and drama all year round, and the newly refurbished bar and foyer area and the opportunity of a candlelit supper after performances promises guests an intimate and enjoyable night out.
