The Towns and Villages:

Get acquainted with our area on our whistle-stop tour of the Tweed Valley: Selkirk [4] can claim to be one of the earliest settlements in the Scottish Borders. It was the site of the first Border Abbey where Scotland’s ‘Braveheart’ William Wallace was declared guardian of Scotland. Nowadays, for a glimpse of its turbulent past you’ll need to use your imagination - its’ pretty market place and medieval streets now play host to a diverse assortment of accommodation, shops, and eateries. Further up the Valley, the little village of Walkerburn is huge on history, wildlife and breathtaking scenery.  Positioned on the banks of the glorious River Tweed, it’s a perfect place to canoe, fish and explore the surrounding countryside.

A few miles north, on first glance the pretty town of Innerleithen [5] looks like a sleepy little hamlet, but it has a thriving mountain biking and hill walking scene because of its’ incredibly varied landscape. It’s steeped in history as a visit to Robert Smail's Printing Works and St Ronan's Well will testify, and with all the amenities you could wish for, it may be small but it’s perfectly formed! Only six miles north of Innerleithen lies the scenic town of Peebles [6], buzzing with shops, cafe's, hotels, market, swimming pool and golf course – no trip to the Tweed Valley is complete without a visit to this picture postcard paradise.

Dating back to the Iron Age, West Linton [7] is a charming village with a character all of its’ own – a perfect place to stroll, browse the second hand book shop, wander its narrow streets and peruse its unique points of interest including the Cross Well and Clock Tower in the Main Street.
