Come and experience live, underwater footage of salmon and other creatures in the Ettrick Water. Our award-winning visitor centre provides a unique glimpse into the fascinating life-cycle of the salmon and their annual migration from the sea to spawn in the burns of the Borders hills. Recorded highlights of the best footage can be viewed all year.

Enjoy a walk to the cauld (weir) and, when river conditions are favourable, watch the salmon leaping right in front of you. Discover how powerful water can be by viewing the information panels at the recently-installed hydro-electric station at the cauld. On return, sample the hospitality and home cooking of local produce at the Waterwheel Cafe.

There are also many free, self-guided walks to choose from at Philiphaugh. Pick up a map from the visitor centre or cafe and enjoy exploring the estate. The Battle of Philiphaugh (1645) Interpretation is open all year round giving a fascinating insight into this fierce and bloody battle. A free audio tour of the battle and the estate is also available via your mobile – simply scan one of the many barcodes found around the estate.

And don’t forget to visit the huge, recently-restored Victorian walled garden, with fruit, vegetables, plants and cut flowers available depending on season.

Dogs welcome. Find us 1.5 miles west of Selkirk on the A708.
